Karen has been creating collages and mixed media pieces for many years as well as taking black and white film fine art photography and portraits. Karen's photographs capture the spirit of a person, a moment, a mood. Karen's collages and mixed media pieces have been commissioned by individuals and published as Editorial Illustrations in newspapers, magazines, and journals nationally and worldwide.


Karen has collaborated with Artisan Woodworker John Chambers of Vermont and darkroom artist Chris Ofria. Karen is currently collaborating with her husband, Peter Holton.


Some of Karen's Editorial Illustration clients have included The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Chicago Tribune, Harvard University, MIT, Boston University, Boston College, WGBH Boston NPR Television Station, The Huntington Theatre Company and many others.


Exhibits, Honors, Awards

Karen's work is privately collected, and has been exhibited at Paradise City Arts Festival, Concord Art Association, Cambridge Art Association, the Belmont Gallery of Art, Gallery Francesca Anderson Fine Arts, Gallery Della-Piana, Arsenal Center for the Arts, University of MA, Lexington Society of Arts and Crafts, Munroe Center for the Arts, Follen Church Society and other venues.  Karen was invited to create a collage chair, Paper Chaise, for the Six Chair Project, which was commissioned by the Lexington Historical Society to help raise money for the restoration of Munroe Tavern, one of Lexington’s historic buildings.

Karen's art has received recognitions and awards from Graphis Magazine, the Society of Illustrators, Print Magazine, the Art Director’s Club of New York, the Art Director’s Club of Boston, the Broadcast Designers’ Association, and the National Association of Newspaper Designers.
